I agree with every point you've made. Maus and Persepolis were shelved with the regular fiction at my library. I'd expect the same for Watchmen and Preacher. This problem also crops up constantly with anime, with adult and kids' titles getting mixed together.

Ultimately, it's the same old song. A good chunk of the population still see comics as a kids' medium and can't get their heads around the idea of an adult comic with artistic value.
