Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Mark Strong have joined the cast of joined “John Carter of Mars,” Disney’s adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing.
Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins topline the production, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet’s warring people.
Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.
Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.
Also in the movie are Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker.
Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris and Colin Wilson are producing “Mars,” which is eyeing a start early next year. Brigham Taylor is overseeing for the studio.
Church, repped by WME, has “Easy A” from Screen Gems in the can while Purefoy, repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, recently starred in TV’s “The Philanthropist.” ICM-repped Strong will next be seen as the villain in “Sherlock Holmes.”

I kind of wish they'd made it the way Stanton originally pitched it: As the first of a series of traditionally animated film for adults. I can see why it didn't go that way, it would've been a hard sell in the states, but it would've been nice.

Its a shame that tons of people that have no idea about the John Carter series of books will think that the upcoming movie ripped off tons of its ideas from Avatar, from the 10 ft. tall aliens to the 6-8 limbed creatures, it will all look like copy cat time to the uninformed. But I'm sure that Stanton and company can overcome this small hurdle and I look forward to an amazing adventure across the sands of Barsoom.

Carter stands 6′2″ tall and has close-cropped black hair and steel-gray eyes. Burroughs portrays him as an immortal being. In the opening pages of A Princess of Mars, the author reveals to the reader that Carter can remember no childhood, having always been a man of about thirty years old. Many generations of families referred to him as "Uncle Jack," but he always lived to see all the members of the families grow old and die, while he remained young.

Carter is also found in other novels and stories. He makes two appearances in Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The first is in the story Allan and the Sundered Veil that appears in the end of volume one. In it, Moore claims that H. P. Lovecraft's Randolph Carter is a descendant of John Carter. He also appears in the beginning of volume two, helping the Barsoomians fight the Martians from The War of the Worlds. The same scenario also appeared in the Burroughs entry in the War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches anthology. Also, one of the protagonists of Robert A. Heinlein's The Number of the Beast is a Captain Zebediah John Carter. The fact is commented on, since all of the protagonists are fans of science fiction from this period. And, in another novel by Charles Stross called Saturn's Children, Barsoom and Carter City are names of settlements on Mars.
