For the first time, 20 films have been submitted for consideration in the animated feature film category of the Academy Awards.
The films are now likely to force the Academy to slot five films into the animation race, a first since the category's creation in 2002. Academy rules state that if fewer than 16 films are submitted in the category, only three can be nominated.
The move now widens the animated Oscar race, and could prove to be a real boon for the smaller films.
The films include Fox 2000's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," Focus' "9," IFC's "Mary & Max," Sony Animation's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Disney's A Christmas Carol" and Disney/Pixar's "Up."
The Academy cautioned that "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," "The Dolphin -- Story of a Dreamer," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Planet 51," "The Princess and the Frog," "The Secret of Kells" and "A Town Called Panic" have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying runs.
The 20 submissions are listed after the break.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" (Fox 2000)
"Astro Boy" (Summit)
"Battle for Terra" (Lionsgate)
"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" (Sony Animation)
"Coraline" (Focus)
"Disney's A Christmas Carol"
"The Dolphin -- Story of a Dreamer" (20th Century Fox)
"Fantastic Mr. Fox" (20th Century Fox)
"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" (20th Century Fox)
"Mary & Max" (IFC)
"The Missing Lynx" (Kandor Graphics, YaYa! Films)
"Monsters vs. Aliens" (DreamWorks Animation)
"9" (Focus)
"Planet 51" (Sony)
"Ponyo" (Disney and Studio Ghibli)
"The Princess and the Frog" (Disney)
"The Secret of Kells" (Les Armateurs, Viva Film, Cartoon Saloon, France 2 Cinema)
"Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure" (Disney)
"A Town Called Panic" (Studio Canal)
"Up" (Disney/Pixar)

How,exactly, can "Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure" qualify for an Oscar when it went straight to DVD instead of getting a wide theatrical release? Yes,it played the El Capitan for a week but it should be ruled ineligible to get a nomination.

The surfeit of entries is likely to force the Academy to nominate five animated films for only the second time since the category was created in 2001. Academy rules state that if fewer than 16 films are submitted in the category, only three can be nominated.
