This little tidbit appeared this week on a site called Letters of Note, referencing a two-year-old story in Comic Book Resources. Still a cool story, though.
In 1982, a 22-year-old fan came up with the idea of a Spider-Man in a black costume. Then-editor in chief Jim Shooter wrote him saying, "I want to buy it," and paid the fan $220 for it.
Black Spidey proved to be a sensation, paved the way for the creation of signature villain Venom, and was a key element of "Spider-Man 3."
Here's that letter:

In the cartoon version of this story, the symbiate was discovered on another planet by some astronauts... and brought back to earth for further investigation. The space shuttle was deflected from it's earthbound course and crashed in New York, where the Rhino was waiting to recover the goods. Rhino was commissioned by the Kingpin who wanted the symbiate for his own evil schemes... Spidey intercepted Rhino and the symbiate. From then on the cartoon followed the story in the article pretty closly (about spiderman rejecting the suit and having to remove it with a church bell, and the joining of Eddie Brock and the suit at the church). But no mention of cancer, Reed Richards, Scorpion, or the ebay winner were in the cartoon version...

Notice that the Chinese know how to do a stimulus package, while no one in power seems to know how to do a stimulus package here in the US.
