A rare treat for Tintin fans: Meltdown Comics on L.A.'s Sunset Boulevard is holding a product exposition and store for brand-new and hard-to-find Tintin material like watches, porcelain statues, miniatures and more.
Meltdown has been THE place for Tintin stuff in L.A. for years, and this event only runs from Dec. 4-13, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The store is working with European importer Kiss That Frog to bring the goods in.
You can probably expect more Tintin stuff to slowly begin making its way to America, the one land where he never really took off beyond a core group who appreciated the European-centric art and storytelling, in advance of the two movies being made by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. This exhibition is not connected to the movie, but you can bet that Paramount and DreamWorks will be looking for ways to make sure audiences will be primed for the release of the first movie, Dec. 23, 2011. (Two years away. Sigh.)

Why aren’t there young and attractive girls in Tintin’world ? His adventures were published in “Le Petit Vingtième”, a weekly youth supplement puublished on Thursday by the Brussels daily “Le Vingtième Siècle” (The Twentieth Century. Why on Thursday? The pupils had one day off. The boys could go to their scouts meetings or make sports or… read boy magazines. At that time, in Belgium, girls were separated from the boys : they even went to diffrent schools. And on Thursday, girls had to learn knitting, cooking and everything intended to make perfect wives. No time for magazines. So, why bother trying to seduce a female readership ? That’s why Tintin and many, many other popular Belgian and French comic strips were so macho and segregationist !

Well, while Finke may believe that WB isn’t interested in more Watchmen filmed material, one should remember that this is a studio which overtly courts the idea of turning virtually ANYTHING into a franchise. And since DiDio actually works in a division of the company as opposed to her merely being a rumor-monger (like Rich Johnston), there’s still a great degree of possibility attached to the notion…especially since Dan hasn’t exactly been hitting a very good ‘batting average’ at DC. Also, one should keep in mind that despite the film flopping at the box office, the DVD and promotional accessory sales results may have leveled out the difference anyway. For example, WB made three Austin Powers flicks, despite the first one merely being a success on DVD.
