Blake Lively has nabbed the female lead opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern."
Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs her father's aerospace company and hires cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who later becomes the intergalactic policeman Green Lantern. In the comics, the romance became complicated when an alien race bestowed her the power of a crystal called the Star Sapphire.
The search for the Martin Campbell-directed film's leading lady was almost as intense as the one for its title star. Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner were reportedly among those in the mix for the role.
The role called for a slightly older actress but Lively, who stars in the CW's "Gossip Girl," impressed the studio and filmmakers with her audition. Warners was also impressed with her work in "The Town," its adaptation of the gritty Chuck Hogan novel directed by Ben Affleck now in post-production.
The casting process will next turn its eye to the roles of Dr. Hector Hammond, one of the key villains, and the alien known as Sinestro.
Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing the big-budget sci-fi movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana in March with an eye towards a June 17, 2011 release.
The script was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green, with Michael Goldenberg currently rewriting.
Lively is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

WTF!WTF!WTF! Why in the world did they think this would be a good choice. May i point you toward the casting of Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns. She was too young and was not experienced enough for the part. Blake Lively will be terrible in this part. I just hope that this will change. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let it change this will be terrible. She is not that good an actress and i just think this will be terrible.

I would like to say This was a good week of news for the most part, now this. Talk about ending on a low note.I'm still jazzed up for Green Lantern, but Lively seems so flavor of the month with Gossip Girl being popular...

This movie was doomed the second they cast Ryan Reynolds.

she better be a damn good actress cause she looks nothing like the character.

i'm actually pretty stoked about this. lively is typecast, in large part, in most of the roles we've seen her in- namely the pretty bimbo or flighty friend- but in some of her lesser-known works (elvis and annabelle, along with the more recently-renowned private lives of pippa lee), she's showed that she truly does have great range and has demonstrated great promise as a young actress. it'll be, at the very least, intriguing to see what she makes of the role- as well as whether or not campbell decides to adapt the character to her or her to the character- my money is on him putting her in a brown wig to fit the role, which may be a mistake.

Might I add that when Kate Bosworth was cast as Lois Lane in Superman Returns, she
a.) had to deal with the baggage from the previous series.
b.) Had to play a veteran in her field.
c.) and had a kid.
Blake on the other hand, does not have that burden. She is also playing a younger character whereas Kate had to play someone older.
And no, the movie was not doomed the second they cast Ryan. If you say hyperbolic stuff like that, then back it up.

I think that Ryan Reynolds can do the part. The whole Bosworth thing is i just do not think she acted the part well. She did not have that Lois Lane personality. I just hope that they either recast Blake Lively or hopefully she is actually good in the part.

You guys... who cares if Blake Lively is cast in this role? If you read the article, the key line is 'with ... currently rewriting.' four screenwriters and the script still isn't finished? who cares who's in it, they can't even write the thing. it's gonna be drivel.

And..Iron Man 1 and 2 never had a real script; just a templete while they would rewrite the script everyday on set, or adlib.
I own you Shawn. where's my soul?

Why did they choose her over Jennifer Garner and Keri Russell, two people who can actually act?

"This movie was doomed the second they cast Ryan Reynolds."
same thing I thought soon as I saw this article.

my initial thought was "this has got to be a joke", but really you can't judge anything until you see the final film, and if she beat out the "other actresses" I have to be optimistic that she'll do well. Think about it this way, did anyone ever imagine Tobey Maguire to be Spiderman?

Ironman 1 had RDJ, Terrance Howard, Jeff Bridges in it. Not Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. No comparison

Ericka, are you trying to compare the two cast?
Pitting 4 actors from Iron Man vs. two from the incomplete cast of Green Lantern?

It really felt like a joke first but we are no one to decide or judge so. Good to see Blake back.

Reynolds is ok for this part. But Star Trek's Chris Pine was originally thought of for the role...and he was in discussions to take the part. Not sure what happened. If he bowed out or whatever. But Pine would have been perfect for the part.

yada yada, I don't care. she has nice gams and seems to have all her teeth. the choice to cast her has nothing to do with whether she fits the part. it never does.
