Sam Worthington, making his first deal since the success of "Avatar," is in negotiations to star in “Dracula Year Zero,” a period vampire epic Alex Proyas is set to direct for Universal. Michael De Luca is producing.
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the spec, which explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It seeks to depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.
Universal’s Jeff Kirschenbaum is shepherding the project, which has no start date and is still in the development stages. Alissa Phillips is executive producing.
Latino Review first reported about Worthington’s possible involvement yesterday.
By playing Dracula, Worthington is continuing to take on larger-than-life roles and tentpole projects. While he will be seen in the Helen Mirren thriller “The Debt,” his next role is Greek hero Perseus in “Clash of the Titans.” Last summer he played a cyborg in “Terminator Salvation.”
Worthington is represented by CAA and Industry Entertainment.

I think the dude will do a brilliant job! It is unlikely that he would do it unless he believed in it, it's integrity and it's potential to be a brilliant story.

Cool post.Sam worthington is great and all, but would be ridiculously miscast as dracula. As a vampire, I feel slightly insulted at the very mention of this, Dracula was just here too and was equally upset...

Sam Worthington to play Dracula in 'Year Zero'

To me, Coppola’s Dracula wasn’t Dracula. The plot of the story was completely different than the plot of the book, and Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Dracula was laughable. Like others have said, Oldman’s Dracula was a completely different character than Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It would be awesome if a decent adaptation of Dracula could be made.

I am interested to see how this will all play out. As for Sam's ability to play a "flawed hero" I believe he will be brilliant.

It's understandable that money makes us autonomous. But how to act if someone has no cash? The one way is to receive the home loans or just student loan.

Oldman, one of the finest actors of all time, laughable? What a ridiculous comment. His portrayal of Dracula may not be your choice of how it should be played, but his performance, as always, was captivating and magnificent. Coppola's Dracula remains an excellent film, whatever sort of "realistic" take on the myth people expect.
Of course a version of Vlad The Impaler taking what is available from history would be very welcome, but I don't see why some are compelled to slate all alternative interpretations. Vicious human nature I guess.
