Tobey Maguire doesn't think "Spider-Man 4" has become a tangled mess.
The 34-year-old star of the web-slinging superhero franchise said preproduction snags aren't dampening his mood about the fourth installment. The next "Spider-Man" film had been scheduled to swing into theaters May 6, 2011, but that seems unlikely now that "Thor," another big-screen Marvel superhero adaptation, has hammered out the same release date.
"Like anything, it's a process," Maguire said Thursday. "We're just in the midst of the process. We have a lot of great stuff in terms of story and script. We're just trying to dial it in and get it ready as quickly as possible. Of course, these movies are a very big undertaking and take a lot more time than a drama or something more straightforward."
Marvel Studios spokesman Paul Pflug declined comment on reports that production had stalled amid script revisions.
Maguire, who has played Peter Parker in all three films, said the plan is to still release the movie in 2011, but wasn't more specific about the date. Whatever happens, he's enthusiastic about Spidey's future.
"Not only do I have specific ideas, but the ideas are evolving on the page," he said. "It's all happening right now. It's all sort of coming together. It's very exciting to me. I think the evolution of the character is really exciting, to be rooted in the history of what we've done already and to have a continuity, yet have a progression or evolution."
After glowing reaction to the first two chapters, critical response to 2007's "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Director Sam Raimi was undecided about returning to the franchise after the third movie, but said at the Festival de Cannes last year that he didn't like "thinking about a world where somebody else was making the Peter Parker story."

I say, yes, Tobey Maguire. You're great as Spidey, and they need to evolve the characters. When Avi Arad said, "It's always going to be about trying to get the girl," he admitted that he was holding back the potential of the character development. Make it edgy, make it dark, and give Peter something real to fight that truly tests him and makes him question who he is as a hero. Actors can only do so much with a script, which is why it's so important that they polish it to the best it can be. And for goodness sake, stop writing Mary Jane as a whiny love interest! Give her something to do besides be kidnapped.

Make Spidey funny!! Anyone who reads the comics knows that Spidey is supposed to be a witty banter guy...like a basketball player talking trash...Yet in every movie he doesn't crack one joke...Then you see Tony Stark making jokes and puns left and right in Iron Man...THAT is how Spidey is supposed to be..
Please fix this!!!

I totally agree with spielen's idea... in all the 3 movies the story has always been the same- peter fights villians who kidnapped mary jane.. bring in new ideas and stop making it boring

Make Mary Jane the bad guy! Pretty simple story idea if you ask me.

Tobey did extremely well in all 3 of spiderman series movies. I don't think that spiderman 4 will be as rocking as another 3 were. Yet waiting for the sipderman 4.

If they are going to reboot the franchise and not have sam Rami and toby maguire in the making of movie 4 I feel its going to be a waste of time like the second punisher movie was

I am glad that someone is talking about it but I am not so happy that this someone is Tobey Maguire. I was actually hoping that someone else will play Spiderman now. I think he is just not good for this role. Maybe it's just my opinion, I don't know...
