AMC is looking to extend its perfect development record with the pickup of two new drama pilots, "Walking Dead" and "The Killing." They mark the fourth and fifth pilots ordered by the basic cable network, with its first three, "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad" and "Rubicon," all going to series.
"Walking Dead" is based on Robert Kirkman's popular comic book. It chronicles the month and years following a zombie apocalypse. Frank Darabont is the project's writer, director and exec producer, with Anne Hurd and David Alpert also exec producing.
"The Killing," from Fox TV studios, is based on the hit Danish series called "Forbrydelsen," written by Veena Sud, and is set in Seattle. The project ties together three stories stemming from the murder of a young girl.
Danish-born FtvS-based producer Mikkel Bondesen is exec producing with Sud.

This feels like an appropriate combination but you want to make sure with adaptations like this that it is an adaptation and not a transcription. I'm happy to hear that Mr. Kirkman is open to divergence from the source material because the only way for an idea to grow is to look at it from different angles. It has to be true to the spirit, if not the canon. What if Batman The Animated Series was the first volume of the original Batman stories? We never would have gotten the funny/scary joker embodied by Mark Hammel or the degree of depth we now have for Mr. Freeze. I'm excited to see where this may lead, and what characters/ new ideas may come out of it.
