Now that every other article about the Oscars seems to be fixated on the James Cameron-Kathryn Bigelow/"Avatar"-"Hurt Locker" fight (what about movies like "Inglourious Basterds," eh?), now seems like a good time to take a trip down memory lane to a time when Bigelow was pre-Mrs. Cameron and love was like a budding flower looking up at the sun.
In the '80s, Cameron mainstay Bill Paxton was in a New Wave band named Martini Ranch. In the mid-'80s, they put out two videos, one of which, "Reach," was directed by Cameron and featured not only Paxton but also "Aliens" alums Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser and Jenette Goldstein, plus Judge Reinhold and Adrian Pasdar.
And Bigelow.
The almost-eight-minute video is a weird semi-post-apocalyptic Western and features Bigelow as the photogenic leader of a pack of all-female bounty hunters tracking down Paxton. It's fun to note that the video has half the cast of "Near Dark," the modern-day-set vampire Western that put Bigelow on the map, and probably the same locations.
Enjoy:

A self-made giant of Hollywood, James Cameron went from set-builder to art director (for 1981's Escape From New York) to writer and then on to director of some of the biggest films of the 1980s and 1990s. He directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in his career-making role in The Terminator (1984) and its sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).

Very great topic here.I am delighted to read it.I would say Mr Cameron’s Avatar and Ms Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker lead the pack with nine nominations each. Jim’s science fiction epic remains favorite for best picture...

I have been skeptical of this film for months, but I think I'll have to see it now. At this point I guess I'll have to trust Cameron that he knows what he's doing. And what would I tell my kids if this becomes the next Star Wars? "No, I didn't see it in the theaters, it just didn't look good."
