Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp and sail the seven seas in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment of the movie series being directed by Rob Marshall.
Depp is reprising his popular role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and while plot details are buried deeper than Blackbeard's treasure, it is known the tale revolves around the Fountain of Youth.
Cruz's character details are also being kept secret, though she is to be Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways.
Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot wrote the script. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.
For Cruz, the role reunites her with Marshall, who directed her in "Nine." Her performance garnered her an Oscar nomination in the best supporting actress category just last week. She won the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role for 2008's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
"Pirates" will set sail before cameras in Hawaii this summer. Disney plans for a May 20, 2011, release.

Um, Penelope won an Oscar for SUPPORTING Actress in 'Vicky...', just saying.

Wow this actually sounds really great!
She really seems like she'd fit into these movies and she could kind of be a female Jack Sparrow who could kick his ass.

GodDAMMIT, why?
I was hoping this movie would be a return to form, but with the Penguin starring in it, I won't even watch it.

Why O Why is Rob Marshall directing??? Horrible choice, if you ask me! Give it to someone else who knows how to make a movie at least!!!

If Penelope Cruz is playing Jack Sparrow's equal/foil, that may mean no Barbossa - as that was his function in those stories.

Well, IIRC, in Paramount's eyes, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 underperformed, so maybe they'll approach this outing with a greater sense of box office realism. Personally, I enjoyed MI3 the most of the film franchise so far, so I'm down with another one.She want want to rethink the whole Colin Farrell thing. A former work colleague of mine had a gay friend who had an affair with Colin Farrell when they were in the same theatre school in Dublin

I have no faith in this director, I half expect him to make it into another lousy musical.

First off, CAPS ARE ANNOYING AND UNNECESSARY. Second, despite Marshall's obvious lack of directorial talent, he is a very good choreographer, and a well-choreographed swordfight may actually benefit the series.

I loved the first movie, but the last two were just ridiculous. I like female pirates as much as the next guy, but can't this series die now? The wedding scene with the two ships in the whirlpool was the killing blow for me.

The sad part is whoever does it will ruin Tim Powers' wonderful "On Stranger Tides". Having Disney adapt even an idea from one of Powers' books will sugar-coat, trivialize, and reduce to juvenile nonsense a marvelous, interesting story that was not intended for an audience of children and families.

hey people don't be so negative.
penelope could be the nice fresh idea we all need for the new pirates.
Johnny and penelope are hot together. they made blow together back in year 2000.

Hi Guy's,

1. The last two movies sucked
2. Much of that was due to the Elizabeth/Will 'romance'
3. Penelope is smokin' and looks the part
4. She can act
5. This will be the closest we get to "Pirates" (and I'm not talking about the Disney movie
