The last few days have been pretty big on the home entertainment front, what with the "Avatar" DVD/Blu-ray news and all. (Need a recap? Read THR and Hero Complex's stories.)
Now comes word that killer asteroid thriller "Armageddon" and modern Western classic "Tombstone" are coming to Blu-ray for the first time, April 27.
"Armageddon" is that fine 1998 Michael Bay movie that featured Ben Affleck playing with animal crackers on Liv Tyler's stomach and Aerosmith's only No. 1 hit, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." You may remember it was a massive hit ($553.7 million at the worldwide boxoffice). What you may not remember was that a young J.J. Abrams was a writer on the movie.
But before you get too excited about the Blu-ray, get this: there are hardly any extras on it. There's only the video for the Aerosmith song, and trailers.
Message to Disney: Would it have killed you to put a little effort into this thing? I don't know, maybe get Bay to come back and talk about it? If "The Rock" can get a Criterion edition, surely "Armageddon" deserves more.
"Tombstone" will fare a little better in the extras department but not by much. You'll be able to see storyboards and a "making of" featurette for the all-star butt-kicking Western. The movie featured such awesome gems as "You tell 'em I'm coming ... and hell's comin' with me," uttered by Kurt Russell, and "I'm your huckleberry," said by Val Kilmer in one of his best performances.
The two movies will be on Blu-ray, so they will look good, but is that enough? Fans know it's that little extra that shows somebody cares.

Action films of the 1990s are a tough decision for me, as to whether to go Blu or not. Made after 2000, sure. Made before 1990, almost never as the film stocks were not as good and you get so much grain from multiple transfers that it's rarely worth it. But 1990s films, it really depends on the quality of the original and how much computer editing they did as opposed to optical printing.

The Resident Evil series is one of the best movie series that came out in recent years. I am an avid fan of these movies and have watched every one of the installment. This movie looks like it is not the end of these series like what I expected. And this seems to have a Blade feel to it.
