It's been rumored for weeks, but it's official now: Sean Bean is starring opposite Luke Goss in "Death Race 2," the prequel to Universal’s 2008 Jason Statham-starrer.
Universal is putting out the feature, currently shooting in South Africa, as part of its DVD Originals banner, a line of originals made for home entertainment. “Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball” was the most recent release.
Also in the cast are Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Frederick Koehler. Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the 2008 movie, is producing with Jeremy Bolt. Roel Reine is directing.
The prequel is serving as the origin story for the character named Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer (Goss) in a declining American Empire where a racing reality show is about to be born in the country’s corrupt prison system.
CAA-repped Bean, seen on screens as Zeus in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” is starring in the pilot “A Game of Thrones,” which is awaiting a series pickup order from HBO.

Death Race; Frankenstein Lives Movie was great when just Luke Goss was behind the wheel of David Carradine original role; Death Race. Sean Bean becoming associated with it; is just icing on the cake. Luke rocks as an actor!

Luke Goss deserves to be in much better material, like James Purefoy, Paul Bettany and a few others. I thought 'Blade II' would elevate his status here a bit, guess not. Hopefully 'Solomon Kane' will do something for Purefoy, although if no one in the U.S. picks it up, I guess not... The best Bettany can get in Hollywood is a voice-over role in 'Iron Man'? All of these guys are much more talented than people realize.
