Sebastian Stan, one of the actors who tested for the title role of Marvel’s “Captain America” which ultimately went to Chris Evans, has nabbed the key role of Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes.
In comic book lore, Barnes, a teenaged orphan, was too young to join the army but became one camp’s mascot. When he discovered Captain America’s identity, he joined Captain America as a partner in his Nazi-fighting escapades. The character died in Captain America’s final World War II adventure.
After decades of being “dead,” the character was revived in 2005 and brought back into modern comic continuity, initially as a covert assassin named Winter Soldier.
It is not clear if the movie version of Barnes sets up the Winter Soldier identity. Marvel would only confirm that Stan is playing Barnes.
Insiders also say Stan has signed on for five or six pictures.
Shooting on the Joe Johnston-directed pic starts this summer in Europe.
Stan, repped by CAA and Brookside Management, starred in NBC’s short-lived “Kings” and had a stint on the CW’s “Gossip Girl.” His feature film career has been on a roll of late, having recently appeared in “Hot Tub Time Machine" and wrapped the Joel Silver-produced thriller “The Apparition” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan."

I would deny, deny , deny anything to do with Hot Tub Time Machine...'nuff said.

I am all for bringing in The Winter Soldier into the movie universe early for the second film.Bucky's transformation is definitely one of the more badass things to happen to the Captain America series in years.

yea its nice to finally have bucky cast along skull and cap. As for stan i dont know his work. But i hope he will do well for bucky. I too think they will probably want to do the whole winter solider thing to for the character. Why waste the character for just the first cap film and ww2. And if he has a multi picture deal, it will probably be for cameo roles and larger roles. The best thing would be is to go the classic comics and see both cap/bucky die in the climax of the first film. Then we get a cameo appearance in the avengers of a masked hitman no one knows who it is. Which then leads to him being bigger threat in cap sequel.

I'm worried about this film... There's not enough time to get everything right... Most genuine blockbuster films take nearly two years, or at least 18 months... And here we are with filming beginning early summer? Anyway...lets hope... If Marvel screws this up with CAPTAIN AMERICA & AVENGERS, this'll be their only chance...

Bucky was Cap's Robin. A young sidekick. As stated, he was killed alongside cap.
In 2005, Marvel revealed that he wasn't killed. Soviet forces rescued and brainwashed him, turning him into a lethal assassin known as the Winter Soldier. He lost an arm and had it replaced with a steel bionic one.
Over the course of decades, the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) is stored is frozen and thawed out for his missions. This slowed his ageing.
Cap finally rescues the Winter Soldier in 2005. He's deprogrammed and takes his place along side cap until such time as Cap is killed by his lover, SHIELD agent Sharon Carter. At which point, Bucky takes over for Cap and becomes the newest Captain America.
Buy the trade paperbacks. It's a sweet thrill ride. The books are written as spy and noir novels. Very sophisticated adult read.

I wouldn't let his resume worry you, Stan did excellent work in Kings. He definitely has talent and I'm excited to see how he'll handle this role.

Looks like Captain America is going to have some good and handsome actors on board. The actresses are good too. Hope the film will be a success, looking forward to checking it out.

I went to school with him! He's extremely talented and one of the few actors in Hollywood today that actually wields the talent as opposed to just the public persona of all things wrong with our country's emphasis on celebrities. This kid has what it takes. Hope he keeps his head straight.

Just watched all of Kings in a day and thought Sebastian was (one of) the best on that show. I don't watch Gossip Girl but will watch any and all dramatic roles he's cast in.
I'm a big Marvel fan although I haven't read as much Cap. America as I would have liked. But I'm really looking forward to this movie (a bit iffy about Chris Evans though...)! I really hope it'll be good so we can get sequels and have more Sebastian Stan!!! :D
